U.S. Games Corporation was a video game company that originally produced electronic handheld sports games. In 1981, the company shifted its focus and concentrated exclusively on developing video game software.
In 1982, U.S. Games was acquired by Quaker Oats Company. The goal was to collaborate with Quaker Oats' Fisher-Price toy brand and compete with the Parker Brothers division of rival General Mills.
U.S. Games released its first Atari 2600 game, "Space Jockey," in January 1982. Over the next year, it released 13 more cartridges. Some of the early titles were published under the "Vidtec" brand name.
The company aimed to build a reputation for high-quality, licensed family games, similar to Parker Brothers. However, U.S. Games' titles sold poorly.
During the 1983 video game crash, Quaker Oats closed the U.S. Games division before the company could utilize its newly acquired Pink Panther license. A company spokesperson stated: "None of our games became a hit. Rather than investing more capital, we decided to give up." |
